Ernesto Neto received inspiration from many artists, art movements and art styles which encouraged him to create his instillation artwork.
One of the art movements he was inspired by was Biomorphism, which was an art style in the 20th century centred on creating artwork inspired by living organisms. This can be seen in many of his artworks, such as the ‘humanoids family’ where he is inspired by the human body. Another art movement that inspired him was the Neo-Concrete movement of Brazil that took place in the 1950’s and the 1960’s. This was a movement that used abstraction to display the message art didn’t have political meaning as a response to governments, such as the Mexican government of the time, using artists and artwork to spread propaganda. Ernesto Neto was also inspired by organic shapes and materials and used them in his artworks to create artwork appealing to the five senses. Examples of his organic materials include spices, sand and shells. An Example of this is his artwork ‘Puff (turmeric)’ in which he uses the spice turmeric. |
